This was written while in Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas. I was pondering the geologic history of the Ozarks and then my wife read an entry in the cabin's guestbook from someone who had been born nearby and had lived in those hills all their life. Also, there were a LOT of crows. ;-)

A man will tell his story like a workingman’s tale,
But the mountains measure time on a different scale.
I was born in a cabin not far from here,
And I’ve lived in these hills for 87 years.
The crows tell the story in meter and rhyme,

I’ve been through the rain, the sun and the snow,
And I’ve seen generations come and go.
The river erodes the ancient plateau,
And reveals the fossils in the valley below.
The water carves the stone and tells the story sublime,

When water covered the Ozarks the Devil gave a sign,
Then God made a mark like a footprint in the pines.
The earth is turning. The planets align.
We should all be so lucky. We should all feel so fine.
The stars tell the story as they wheel and shine,
Of a long life lived, in a very short time.
