about

Merry Christmas from Johnny C. Lately!

lyrics

It was Christmas at Cowhill, at home on the range.
The dogies and the reindeer had been acting strange.
The stockings were hung on the cactus with care.
No one was peepin’, the cowpokes were sleepin’,
Cause the cowpokes don’t care.

The bois d’ arcs were bare, oh, what a sight!
The cedar trees glistened in the frosty moonlight.
A barn owl kept tryin’, ‘til she got it right.
The harness bells ringin’, and the crickets kept singin’,
“Oh, Silent Night.”

Yodeling

Out in the pasture, the cattle would low,
And down in the cabin, by the firelight’s glow,
A rugged old wrangler, he sat all alone,
And like a beast in the manger, he was not a stranger,
To the feeling of feeling so low.

The coyotes were cryin’, “Joy to the World.”
The north star was shinin’ like a Christmas tree pearl.
The sheep in the meadow, they made not a sound,
And the spirit of Christmas was nowhere around.

The cowboy had rambled his life in despair,
Like a red-tailed hawk, circlin’ the air,
With nothin’ and no-one to care for or care,
But the black-dirt angels watched over the wrangler,
As the holidays hung in the air.

The coyotes were cryin’, “Joy to the World.”
The north star was shinin’ like a Christmas tree pearl.
The sheep in the meadow, they made not a sound,
And the spirit of Christmas was nowhere around.

Yodeling

Some say his heart was wound up too tight.
Some say a miracle happened that night.
Through the years and the beers and the tears that he cried,
He finally gave up the fight.
The cowboy found Christmas that night.

The coyotes were cryin’, “Joy to the World.”
The north star was shinin’ like a Christmas tree pearl.
The sheep in the meadow, they made not a sound,
And the spirit of Christmas was felt all around.
